Watercycle Technologies Ltd., a climate-tech company based in Manchester, England, has formed a strategic partnership with Primobius GmbH, a Germany-based joint venture combining Neometals Ltd. and SMS Group. This collaboration focuses on sustainable battery recycling and critical mineral recovery. The companies will work together to enhance battery recycling processes and reduce the environmental impact of battery production.

Primobius CEO Michel Siemon shared his excitement about the partnership, saying, “Partnering with Watercycle is a great opportunity to combine our strengths and push the boundaries of battery recycling. We are expanding our ecosystem and improving our ability to help clients meet sustainability goals and drive positive change.”

Advancing Battery Recycling Technology

Primobius uses a two-step method to recover valuable materials from end-of-life and scrap lithium-ion batteries. This method significantly reduces carbon emissions compared to traditional recycling. It complements Watercycle’s systems for sustainable mineral recovery. Together, the companies aim to reduce the need for new raw materials in the battery supply chain.

Watercycle Technologies specializes in Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE), Crystallization, and recycling spent lithium-ion batteries and black mass. Their scalable and modular technology can also extract other critical minerals and metals from wastewater. These solutions enable industries to embrace sustainable practices and support a circular economy.

A Strong Foundation for Future Growth

Primobius benefits from SMS Group’s 150 years of engineering expertise and Neometals Ltd.’s technical know-how in battery materials production and sustainable resource recovery. This partnership allows Primobius to offer high-quality, regulatory-compliant recycling plants. It also provides scalability for project execution.

Watercycle Technologies, a spin-out from the University of Manchester, is backed by Aer Ventures. The companies share a vision of driving innovation using advanced hydrometallurgical processes. Together, they work to support the transition to a circular economy and reduce the environmental footprint of battery production.
