Wendt Corp., a leading provider of recycling shredding and separation equipment, has installed the Wendt M6090 automobile shredder at Island Recycling, a Hawaii-based recycling center. Additionally, this upgrade includes an enhanced nonferrous recovery system. Together, these improvements are designed to boost operational efficiency, material recovery, and throughput at Island Recycling.

Island Recycling’s Commitment to Sustainability and Growth

Founded in 1983 by Jim Nutter, Island Recycling started as a small operation in a shipping container. It was a pioneering effort to introduce recycling to Hawaii. Today, under the leadership of Nick Nutter, the company has expanded to operate two locations. Island Recycling now plays a crucial role in diverting over 60,000 tons of recyclable materials from landfills every year. As a family-run business, Island remains deeply committed to sustainability and environmental stewardship.

The Need for Advanced Shredding Technology

Island Recycling faced challenges with its existing shredding equipment. Specifically, the company was losing 16% of nonferrous metals from automobile shredder residue (ASR). This loss of valuable metals was a missed opportunity, especially considering Hawaii’s limited landfill space. Therefore, Nick Nutter recognized the need to improve metal recovery and, in turn, contacted Wendt Corp. for a solution.

Wendt’s Solution: Advanced Shredding and Recovery Systems

In response to Island Recycling’s needs, Wendt installed the M6090 shredder, known for its high reliability and superior performance. Moreover, the new shredder features a Bowe Disc Rotor, an upgraded infeed conveyor, a feed roll assembly, and a pin puller. Furthermore, Island Recycling also upgraded to a 2,500-horsepower motor with variable frequency drive (VFD) technology, which is scheduled for installation later this year.

Additionally, Wendt’s nonferrous recovery system incorporates advanced technology such as eddy current separators for zorba recovery and the Wendt Tomra Finder for recovering insulated copper wire and stainless steel. These innovative solutions will significantly enhance Island Recycling’s ability to capture more nonferrous metals, thereby boosting both profits and sustainability.

Reliable Support and Future Growth

Beyond the equipment upgrades, Wendt has provided Island Recycling with reliable service and support. Nick Nutter emphasized the importance of quick response times and the availability of spare parts. This support has been instrumental in keeping operations running smoothly. With these improvements, Island Recycling is now well-positioned for continued growth, while also contributing to Hawaii’s long-term sustainability goals.

“We’re excited about the future,” said Nutter. “Our new shredder and nonferrous equipment have not only boosted our profitability but also support our long-term goals of reducing landfill waste. Additionally, they align with our mission of leading the way in recycling technology and sustainability in Hawaii.”

Conclusion

In conclusion, Wendt Corp.’s advanced shredding and nonferrous recovery systems have significantly transformed Island Recycling’s operations. These systems have enhanced both operational efficiency and profitability. As Hawaii continues to focus on sustainability, Island Recycling will remain a key player in reducing landfill waste and enhancing resource recovery. With Wendt’s technology and ongoing support, Island Recycling is well-equipped for further growth in the recycling industry.
