Wendt and Novelis Push Forward on Aluminum Recycling Innovation
Wendt Corp. has completed the commissioning of a new aluminum scrap shredder and sorting system for Novelis Inc. at its Guthrie, Kentucky plant. This installation marks a significant step in Novelis’ broader mission to increase recycled content across its aluminum product line.
At the center of the operation is Wendt’s M6090 Shredder, a modular, high-efficiency system engineered for maximum throughput. The AC motor is paired with a variable frequency drive (VFD), enabling precision energy control and operational optimization. The system also includes an EZR Pre-Shredder, infeed conveyor, and a full downstream sorting array tailored for aluminum scrap processing.
This advanced line can handle a diverse feedstock, including taint/tabor, production scrap, and used beverage cans (UBCs). Designed for flexibility, the system supports Novelis in managing evolving input materials while achieving high recovery rates and product purity.
New Aluminum Scrap Shredding System Supports Circular Economy Goals
The project represents Novelis’ latest move toward circular manufacturing and reduced environmental impact. As the world’s largest aluminum recycler, Novelis has prioritized innovations that support closed-loop systems across the automotive, beverage, and specialty sectors.
Wendt’s technology enables Novelis to remain adaptive in its sourcing while ensuring consistent aluminum quality. This helps the company meet growing demand for sustainable metal, especially in electric vehicles and packaging.
Tom Wendt, President of Wendt Corp., emphasized the strategic importance of the project. “This is one of the most advanced aluminum processing systems we’ve delivered,” he said. “It reflects both our technical capabilities and our shared vision with Novelis for a more sustainable future.”
SuperMetalPrice Commentary:
Wendt’s deployment at Novelis signals the increasing demand for high-efficiency aluminum recycling systems in North America. As ESG regulations tighten and industrial buyers seek greener materials, facilities like Guthrie will shape the next era of metal sourcing. The emphasis on modular, scalable shredding technology gives Novelis the agility to lead in the circular economy while maintaining profitability. For equipment providers like Wendt, such high-profile collaborations will likely drive further innovation and global expansion in aluminum processing infrastructure.
