Xcel Energy Secures Extended Licence for Monticello Nuclear Plant to Support Clean Energy Transition

Monticello Nuclear Plant

Monticello’s Extended Operations Vital for Clean Energy Goals

Xcel Energy has successfully secured a 20-year extension of its operating licence for the Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant, a significant move to meet the company’s clean energy goals. This renewal, granted by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), extends Monticello’s operation until 2050, reinforcing the utility’s strategy to achieve 100% carbon-free electricity. The plant’s continued operation is integral to providing stable, carbon-free energy as Xcel Energy works towards decarbonising its power mix.

Licensing Process and Multi-Year Review Ensures Plant Safety

The NRC’s decision follows a multi-year process of rigorous inspections and reviews to ensure Monticello meets or exceeds the strictest safety, environmental, and operational standards. The comprehensive evaluations assure the long-term reliability of the plant, which powers over 500,000 homes annually. The renewal is subject to further approval from state regulators, and Xcel Energy has already secured state-level approval from the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (PUC) to operate until 2040, with plans for the second phase of approval for the remaining 10 years.

Monticello’s Role in Energy Reliability and Economic Impact

The Monticello Nuclear Plant is one of the most important assets in Xcel Energy’s clean energy strategy, being the only 24/7 carbon-free energy source available. It contributes significantly to regional energy reliability, with nearly 25% of the electricity consumed by Xcel Energy customers in the Upper Midwest coming from Monticello and the Prairie Island Nuclear Generating Plant. The plant also plays an essential role in the local economy, providing thousands of jobs and being the largest taxpayer in the Monticello area.

Supporting Decarbonisation and the Energy Transition

Xcel Energy’s commitment to long-term sustainability and achieving decarbonisation goals is further supported by Monticello’s extended operations. As the company works towards 100% clean energy, nuclear power is seen as a reliable, critical energy source that can provide a consistent supply of electricity while helping to meet the growing demand for power in the Upper Midwest. The Monticello plant remains pivotal in Xcel Energy’s journey toward a carbon-free future.
