8HP Evo Hybrid Transmission Targets Global Electrified Vehicle Growth
ZF has introduced its 8HP evo hybrid transmission at IAA 2025, addressing the global surge in demand for hybrid powertrains. Building on its best-selling 8-speed automatic transmission, the updated 8HP evo is tailored for plug-in hybrid (PHEV), full hybrid (HEV), and mild hybrid (MHEV) systems. It is compatible with a broad range of OEM platforms, helping automakers scale hybrid offerings amid a projected 10% annual market growth by 2032.
ZF has enhanced the electrification and efficiency of the new transmission. It features fewer components, reduced weight, and simpler assembly. In its PHEV setup, the 8HP evo delivers up to 200 kW of electric power and 600 Nm of torque—a major leap from its predecessor. Losses at the input shaft are down by 28%, improving system efficiency and enabling 10% more driving range using the same battery capacity.
ZF 8HP Evo Transmission Reduces Rare Earth Usage and Boosts Modularity
The 8HP evo integrates ZF’s SELECT platform, a modular system designed to optimize electrified drivetrains. It includes redesigned electric motors, updated power electronics, and improved mechanical parts. Higher processing power also unlocks advanced software features. Automakers can now integrate their control systems more easily through ZF’s updated software architecture.
Importantly, ZF has cut back on the use of heavy rare earth materials, improving both sustainability and cost-efficiency. The evo model supports 400 V HEV systems, enabling full-hybrid vehicles to operate and recharge without external charging. This development is crucial for markets lacking EV infrastructure, as recuperation and self-charging improve vehicle accessibility and affordability.
SuperMetalPrice Commentary:
ZF’s 8HP evo transmission marks a strategic response to hybrid market dynamics, particularly in regions like Asia and North America. By increasing electric output, range, and drivetrain flexibility while minimizing rare earth dependency, ZF strengthens its role in the global vehicle electrification supply chain. As OEMs seek scalable, cost-effective solutions, the 8HP evo may become a standard-bearer for hybrid transmission design in the decade ahead.
