Acciona has announced a major solar energy project in Peru, set to construct a 225MW photovoltaic (PV) solar plant in Arequipa for the local electricity provider, Kallpa Generación. This new facility will be located in the La Joya district and is expected to play a significant role in Peru’s renewable energy transition.
Project Scope and Environmental Impact
The solar plant will cover an area of 549 hectares and incorporate 371,040 high-performance bifacial solar panels. These panels are designed to capture sunlight on both sides, optimizing energy production. The facility is projected to generate 611GWh of electricity annually, which is sufficient to power approximately 547,000 households. This clean energy initiative is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 215,000 tonnes each year, further advancing efforts to meet global sustainability goals.
Power Grid Integration and EPC Contract
Once completed, the solar plant will be connected to the Peruvian national grid via the 220kV San José substation. Acciona will manage the project through a turnkey Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract, ensuring a streamlined process for the plant’s construction and commissioning.
Acciona’s Global Renewable Energy Footprint
Acciona continues to build on its global expertise in renewable energy, with over 2.95GW of installed solar capacity in nine countries. Some of its flagship solar projects include the 1.054GW Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum solar park in Dubai, the 246MW El Romero Solar in Chile’s Atacama Desert, and the 94MW Sishen Solar Plant in South Africa. This expansion into Peru is a natural step for the company, furthering its commitment to renewable energy development across the globe.
Expanding Power Transmission Capabilities in Peru
In addition to its solar projects, Acciona is strengthening its presence in Peru’s energy sector by acquiring Darby International Capital’s high-voltage transmission business for €220 million. This acquisition gives Acciona control of over 1,200 kilometers of transmission lines and 30 substations, broadening its capability to manage and distribute energy efficiently across the country.
Additional Renewable Projects
Acciona is also making strides in wind power with its 923MW MacIntyre onshore wind farm in Queensland, Australia. The first turbines of this wind farm were connected to the grid in late 2023, and the project is expected to be fully operational by Q3 2025, making it the largest wind farm in the southern hemisphere.
