Acuity Surgical Devices has announced the acquisition of an AddUp FormUp 350 metal powder bed fusion system, marking a significant step in the company’s manufacturing strategy.
Enhancing Manufacturing Control
Acuity aims to achieve vertical integration in its manufacturing processes by adopting this advanced technology, which will enhance control over costs, lead times, and product quality. The collaboration with AddUp has facilitated the validation process for Acuity’s existing medical devices before the FormUp 350 is brought in-house.
Founded in 2013, Acuity Surgical specializes in comprehensive spinal surgery solutions. The company has developed notable products such as the Ventris ALIF Stand-Alone Anterior Lumbar System and the Tera-O Posterior Lumbar System.
Streamlining Production and Design Iteration
As part of its strategy to expand its product line and expedite the design iteration process, Acuity is moving away from a reliance on global contract manufacturers. The in-house implementation of the FormUp 350 is expected to improve both quality and throughput, attributed to AddUp’s roller recoating system, while also reducing delivery times to customers.
The decision to select the FormUp 350 was influenced by its superior surface finish, throughput capabilities, and a substantial build volume of 350 x 350 x 350 mm.
Commitment to Quality and Innovation
“Partnering with AddUp and integrating the FormUp 350 into our manufacturing process represents a pivotal moment for Acuity Surgical,” stated Bryan Cowan, co-founder and CEO of Acuity Surgical. He emphasized that this collaboration enhances production capabilities and aligns with their commitment to delivering high-quality products. Acuity is particularly focused on density control and is optimistic about the future possibilities this integration offers.
Nick Estock, Deputy CEO of AddUp, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, highlighting the support provided by their ISO 13485 certified AddUp Solution Center. He stated, “We are confident that this partnership will drive innovation and excellence in the medical device industry.”
Strengthening Healthcare Presence
AddUp has established a strong foothold in the healthcare sector, with various partnerships aimed at facilitating advancements in 3D printing technologies. Notably, Anatomic Implants is working with AddUp to secure FDA 510(k) clearance for its 3D printed Anatomical Great Toe, which is anticipated to be approved later this year.
