ACWA Power Wins Azerbaijan’s Caspian SWRO Desalination Project

ACWA Power, Azerbaijan’s Caspian SWRO Desalination Project

ACWA Power, the world’s largest private water desalination company and a leader in energy transition, has successfully secured the Caspian SWRO desalination project in Azerbaijan. In collaboration with IC İÇTAŞ İNŞAAT SANAYİ VE TİCARET A.Ş., the consortium will build a seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination plant to address the region’s growing water demand.

Project Overview and Significance

The new desalination plant will be located at the Sumgayit Chemical Industrial Park in Azerbaijan. With a daily capacity of 300,000 cubic meters, the facility is designed to meet the increasing demand for drinking water in Baku and the Absheron Peninsula. The project is part of Azerbaijan’s first public-private partnership (PPP) initiative and will have a 27.5-year duration. After this period, the management of the plant will be transferred to the Azerbaijan State Water Resources Agency.

This project is crucial to improving the water supply and enhancing climate change resilience in the region. ACWA Power’s successful bid highlights its competitive edge in the international desalination market and reaffirms its commitment to delivering sustainable and affordable potable water solutions globally.

Azerbaijan’s Focus on Water Security

Azerbaijan has been prioritizing efficient water resource management as part of its National Strategy on Efficient Use of Water Resources. ACWA Power, active in Azerbaijan since 2019, has played a key role in infrastructure development, including projects like the 240 MW Absheron-Khizi wind farm. The Caspian SWRO project underscores the government’s focus on sustainable water management solutions to address water security challenges.
