ACWA Power Wins Azerbaijan’s Caspian SWRO Desalination Project

ACWA Power, Azerbaijan’s Caspian SWRO Desalination Project

ACWA Power, a global leader in water desalination, has secured a significant project in Azerbaijan. The company, alongside IC İÇTAŞ İNŞAAT SANAYİ VE TİCARET A.Ş., will construct a seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination plant. This initiative addresses the growing water demand in the region. Moreover, it strengthens Azerbaijan’s water security.

Project Details and Impact

The new desalination plant will reside in the Sumgayit Chemical Industrial Park. It boasts a daily capacity of 300,000 cubic meters. Consequently, it will significantly improve drinking water supply for Baku and the Absheron Peninsula. This project represents Azerbaijan’s first public-private partnership (PPP) in the water sector. Furthermore, the contract spans 27.5 years. Subsequently, the Azerbaijan State Water Resources Agency will assume plant management.

ACWA Power’s success in this bid highlights its expertise. It reaffirms their commitment to sustainable water solutions. Additionally, this project enhances climate change resilience.

Azerbaijan’s Water Security Strategy

Azerbaijan prioritizes efficient water resource management. This aligns with its National Strategy on Efficient Use of Water Resources. ACWA Power has been active in Azerbaijan since 2019. They have contributed to infrastructure development. For instance, they are building the 240 MW Absheron-Khizi wind farm. The Caspian SWRO project reinforces the government’s focus on sustainable water management.
