Ameresco SUNEL Energy to Build 466MWp Solar Parks in Romania
Ameresco SUNEL Energy SA has signed €303.4 million in EPC contracts for three major solar projects in Romania. These 466MWp solar parks mark a key step in the country’s move toward renewable energy and away from coal-fired power.
The joint venture, between Ameresco Inc. and SUNEL Group, will deliver the full EPC scope. This includes engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and long-term maintenance of the sites. Located in southwestern Romania, the parks will help meet the country’s 2032 coal phase-out target.
The company aims to deliver projects that meet strict efficiency and environmental standards. According to Pete Christakis, Managing Director of Ameresco SUNEL Energy SA, the venture also supports Europe’s broader energy security and sustainability goals.
Over 750,000 Solar Modules to Support Romania’s Energy Shift
The solar parks will use more than 757,000 fixed-tilt solar modules, ensuring maximum energy output. Once operational, the projects are expected to offset 734,789 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually, aligning with Romania’s net-zero goals.
This solar projects Romania initiative reinforces the country’s role in Europe’s clean energy strategy. “Romania’s solar potential positions it as a renewable energy leader,” said Konstantinos Zygouras, Vice President of Ameresco SUNEL Energy SA. The collaboration also reflects the commitment of energy partners, including OMV Petrom, to build a cleaner future.
Construction will take around 18 months, during which Romania will edge closer to its national renewable energy targets. These solar projects not only support decarbonization but also drive economic growth and regional energy independence.
