High Recovery Rates Signal First U.S. Antimony Production in Decades

Americas Gold and Silver Corporation (TSX: USA, NYSE American: USAS) announced a breakthrough at its Galena Complex in Idaho. New metallurgical testwork confirms over 90% antimony recovery. This marks a critical step toward restarting domestic antimony production in the United States.

The company achieved strong silver and copper recoveries as well. However, the focus remains on unlocking antimony, a key critical mineral with national security significance. CEO Paul Andre Huet emphasized that this breakthrough could allow the company to become the only current antimony producer in the U.S.

Historic Asset, New Opportunity

The Galena Complex hosts antimony in the sulfosalt mineral tetrahedrite, alongside silver, copper, and iron. Although Galena has produced over 18 million pounds of antimony since 2001, its quality fell short of smelter requirements.

To address this, Americas Gold and Silver partnered with SGS Canada Inc. for new flotation tests. These confirmed that a high-grade antimony-silver concentrate can now be achieved from current ore using modern metallurgical methods.

Test highlights include:

  • Antimony recovery: 90–96% from ore grading ~1% Sb

  • Silver recovery: 98–99% from ore grading ~50 oz/ton

  • Rougher concentrate: 18–19% Sb, ~600 oz/ton Ag

These results suggest a marketable concentrate is now viable.

Strategic Timing for Critical Mineral Security

Antimony appears on the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Critical Minerals List due to its roles in:

  • Defense (ammunition, armor alloys)

  • Energy (battery storage systems)

  • Semiconductors (flame retardants)

More than 90% of U.S. antimony is imported—mainly from China, Russia, and Tajikistan. Since China halted exports to the U.S. in 2024, the domestic supply gap has widened. The U.S. currently has no operating antimony mines.

Americas Gold and Silver is now advancing trade-off studies to convert its concentrate into saleable antimony products. This initiative positions the company as a first-mover in solving a national supply chain issue.

What’s Next for Galena?

In the next phase, Allihies Engineering Inc. will oversee further testing to separate and upgrade antimony from the bulk concentrate. This could enable the production of multiple saleable antimony products and add a valuable revenue stream.

If successful, the Galena Complex will transform from a legacy silver mine into a strategic metals hub, reinforcing U.S. resilience in the global antimony market.
