Conticon, a joint venture between Grupo Condumex and Xignux, has partnered with SMS group to expand its copper rod production in Celaya-Villagrán, Mexico. The expansion focuses on increasing the output of electrolytic tough pitch (ETP) copper rod. This copper rod is essential for industries like automotive and telecommunications.

Strategic Investment for Enhanced Capacity

The expansion project involves installing a new CONTIROD CR3700 line. This line combines casting and rolling processes. The new system aims to meet the rising demand for high-quality copper rod in the region. The Celaya-Villagrán plant, installed by SMS group in 1984, currently produces 230,000 tons annually. With the new line, the plant’s capacity will rise to 550,000 tons per year, an increase of 320,000 tons.

Project Timeline and Future Prospects

The new CONTIROD CR3700 line will be operational in 14 months. The project will be finished by the fourth quarter of 2026. This expansion positions the plant to meet the growing needs of industries like automotive and telecommunications. These industries rely heavily on high-quality copper rod.

Conticon is strengthening its position in the global copper market with this investment. The company is also improving its production processes and advancing technology in Mexico’s metal manufacturing sector.
