EOS GmbH, based in Krailling, Germany, has made a significant breakthrough in sustainable manufacturing. The company announced that its widely used EOS Aluminium AlSi10Mg alloy powder is now produced with 100% recycled feedstock. This move marks a major step in reducing the environmental impact of additive manufacturing materials.
Sustainability in Aluminium Powder Production
By increasing the recycled content to 100%, EOS has achieved an impressive 77% reduction in CO2e emissions compared to the previous material. Compared to AlSi10Mg made from 100% virgin raw material, this new version of the alloy achieves an 83% reduction in CO2e emissions. The change not only benefits the environment but also retains the same high performance and properties in additively manufactured parts. As a result, customers do not need to requalify their applications when switching to this more sustainable material.
EOS first introduced the aluminium alloy powder to its Responsible Products portfolio in April 2024, initially incorporating 30% recycled feedstock. At that stage, the material reduced CO2e emissions by 25%. The transition to 100% recycled feedstock further emphasizes EOS’s commitment to sustainability and innovation in materials production.
The Role of Responsible Manufacturing at EOS
Sophia Heyl, a product specialist at EOS, expressed the company’s pride in developing its first metal material made with 100% recycled feedstock. She emphasized EOS’s ongoing commitment to reducing the carbon footprint of its products. This includes not only materials but also hardware and design optimization. Each step towards more sustainable products contributes to a more responsible end-use for customers and the climate.
Björn Hannappel, EOS’s head of sustainability, noted that the company is advancing in Responsible Manufacturing. EOS is gradually expanding its portfolio of Responsible Products. By minimizing waste and reducing environmental footprints, businesses can create more efficient models while protecting the planet.
Conclusion
EOS’s achievement in producing 100% recycled aluminium alloy powder reflects its ongoing dedication to sustainability in the metal additive manufacturing industry. With a 77% reduction in CO2 emissions and the assurance of unchanged material properties, this innovation offers a more eco-friendly alternative without compromising performance. As the industry continues to prioritize environmental responsibility, EOS leads the way toward more sustainable solutions in metal powder production.
