Flash Floods in Spain Leave Several Missing Amid Red Alert

Severe Weather Causes Disruption
Flash floods in eastern and southern Spain have resulted in multiple missing persons, disrupted train services, and a red alert for continued heavy rainfall. The adverse weather is expected to persist, prompting authorities to warn residents to exercise caution.

Impact on Transportation
A high-speed train derailed near Malaga while carrying nearly 300 passengers; fortunately, no injuries were reported. Flooding has also disrupted train services between Valencia and Madrid, along with commuter lines across the affected areas.

Record Rainfall and Infrastructure Damage
The State Meteorological Agency reported extreme rainfall, with areas such as Turís and Utiel receiving around 200 liters of rain per square meter. The flooding was severe enough to cause a bridge collapse in Picanya. Many regions recorded over 100 liters of rain on Tuesday alone.

Climate Change Concerns
Spain has experienced similar severe storms in recent autumns, although recent rainfall has helped mitigate the effects of a severe drought earlier this year. Scientists link the increasing frequency of extreme weather events to climate change, raising concerns about future patterns.
