Expansions to Meet Rising Copper Demand, Driven by EV and Infrastructure Growth

Freeport-McMoRan, a global leader in copper mining, has unveiled plans to expand its operations in Arizona and Chile to address the increasing demand for copper, particularly fueled by the growth of electric vehicle (EV) production and global infrastructure development. The company has outlined major projects scheduled for 2025 and beyond, aimed at increasing copper production and automating operations.

Key Expansion Projects in Arizona and Chile

  • Bagdad Mine (Arizona): Freeport plans to double the concentrator capacity at the Bagdad mine, targeting annual copper production of 200–250 million pounds. This mine will also become the first in Freeport’s portfolio to implement a fully autonomous haulage system, transitioning its fleet to 100% automation.
  • Lonestar/Safford Mine (Arizona): Exploration studies are currently underway, with results expected by late 2024. This could lead to substantial capacity increases, positioning the site for future growth.
  • El Abra Mine (Chile): Expansion efforts at El Abra are under review, with environmental impact assessments slated for submission by the end of 2025, which will help guide the decision on scaling up production.

Copper Production and Market Dynamics

Freeport’s copper production for Q3 saw a slight decline of 3% year-on-year, totaling 1.05 billion pounds. However, year-to-date production remains up by 1.8%, totaling 3.17 billion pounds. Copper prices also saw a notable increase, averaging $4.32 per pound, up from $3.86 per pound in the same period last year, contributing to improved revenues.

Regional Production Insights

  • North America: Copper production fell 9% to 313 million pounds due to lower ore grades and operating rates, particularly at the Morenci joint venture. However, molybdenum production in the region increased by 14%, reaching 8 million pounds.
  • South America: Copper production in the region declined 2% to 299 million pounds, primarily due to shipment delays and reduced output at the Cerro Verde mine.
  • Indonesia: Copper output rose by 0.7% to 439 million pounds, although a fire at the Manyar smelter in October may impact fourth-quarter production.
    Financial Performance and Outlook

Freeport-McMoRan posted a quarterly profit of $526 million, up from $454 million the previous year. Revenue increased to $6.8 billion, up from $5.8 billion, reflecting the positive impact of higher copper prices.

Looking ahead, Freeport is cautiously optimistic about copper demand, driven by strong EV-related demand from China, particularly with expected government stimulus, and balanced demand in the US market, which is bolstered by robust performance in power cables and building wire sectors.
