Redwood Materials and ESFI Drive Lithium-Ion Battery Recycling Awareness

Redwood Materials and the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) have partnered to raise public awareness of lithium-ion battery recycling. Their campaign highlights the importance of proper disposal, emphasizing safety and strengthening U.S. energy dominance. By promoting the availability of LIB drop-off points across South Carolina, they aim to make recycling more accessible to consumers. Redwood, based in Carson City, Nevada, claims it recovers over 95% of critical minerals like lithium, cobalt, copper, and nickel, returning these to the supply chain to reduce resource dependency.

The campaign also collaborates with the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services (SCDES) through its “Be Battery Smart” initiative. This joint effort focuses on expanding battery collection infrastructure and educating the public on the safe handling of lithium-ion batteries. As battery-powered devices become ubiquitous—from phones to electric vehicles—consumer education becomes vital to protecting both people and the environment.

 

Focus on Safety and Energy Independence in Lithium-Ion Battery Recycling

Safety remains a core concern in the campaign, with ESFI providing authoritative guidance throughout the battery lifecycle. ESFI has been a leading voice on lithium-ion battery safety, filling gaps in public knowledge from responsible shopping to repurposing and recycling. The campaign coincides with the National Fire Protection Association’s Fire Prevention Week, themed “Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-ion Batteries in Your Home.” This synergy reinforces messaging about safe battery use, charging, and disposal.

Redwood Materials operates 41 drop-off locations in Greenville, Columbia, and Charleston, South Carolina. They actively invite businesses and organizations to partner in expanding battery collection programs, including events and dedicated collection boxes. This collective effort supports American energy independence by recycling vital materials domestically while creating local jobs.
