Key Partnership to Advance Singapore’s Green Energy Goals
GE Vernova has been selected to supply its 9HA.01 gas turbine for YTL PowerSeraya’s upcoming hydrogen-capable 600MW combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant in Singapore. This project marks a significant milestone in Singapore’s efforts to transition to a more sustainable energy future, in line with the country’s National Hydrogen Strategy, which aims to meet up to 50% of its electricity needs through low-carbon hydrogen by 2050.
The power plant will be developed at the Pulau Seraya Power Station (PSPS) on Jurong Island, an essential site for Singapore’s energy infrastructure. The consortium responsible for the project includes GE Vernova, Powerchina, and SEPCOIII. Construction of the plant officially began in early October 2024, and the project is expected to be completed by December 2027. With an estimated total investment of approximately S$800 million (around $604.14 million), the facility will serve a vital role in Singapore’s push towards a cleaner energy mix, alongside other renewable sources like solar power and imported electricity.
Technological Innovation for Cleaner Power Generation
At the heart of the CCGT plant will be GE Vernova’s 9HA.01 gas turbine, which is specifically designed to integrate hydrogen into the power generation process. The turbine comes equipped with GE Vernova’s DLN2.6e combustion system, allowing it to burn up to 50% hydrogen blended with natural gas. This is a crucial capability as it supports the use of hydrogen, a cleaner fuel alternative, for generating electricity and contributes to lowering carbon emissions in the power sector. In addition to the gas turbine, the plant will feature an STF-A650 steam turbine, a W88 generator, and a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) that operates on a triple-pressure, reheat system, all of which enhance the plant’s overall energy efficiency.
The hydrogen-capable power plant is expected to provide electricity to approximately 864,000 four-room Housing and Development Board (HDB) flats, which represents a substantial contribution to Singapore’s energy needs. By supporting the country’s hydrogen ambitions, this project is a key step toward diversifying Singapore’s energy mix and reducing its carbon footprint.
GE Vernova’s Role in the Global Transition to Lower-Carbon Energy
This deal with YTL PowerSeraya underscores GE Vernova’s leadership in hydrogen and gas turbine technology, as the company continues to work towards providing solutions that support decarbonization in the energy sector. GE Vernova’s 9HA.01 gas turbines are already known for their high efficiency and adaptability, and the ability to burn hydrogen blends further enhances their potential to deliver low-carbon power.
Ramesh Singaram, CEO of GE Vernova Gas Power Asia, expressed confidence in the company’s technology, noting that the collaboration with YTL PowerSeraya aligns with Singapore’s long-term commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. This project not only represents a technological breakthrough but also strengthens Singapore’s position as a leader in clean energy innovation.
A Step Toward a Sustainable Energy Future
The hydrogen-capable CCGT plant is part of a broader strategy by YTL PowerSeraya to diversify Singapore’s energy sources and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. John Ng, CEO of YTL PowerSeraya, emphasized the importance of the collaboration with GE Vernova, highlighting the significance of this project in realizing Singapore’s green energy goals. He pointed out that GE Vernova’s expertise in both hydrogen and gas turbine technology would play a key role in delivering more efficient and lower-carbon energy solutions for Singapore.
This project comes on the heels of GE Vernova’s other high-profile contracts, such as those in Saudi Arabia, where the company secured agreements to supply gas turbines for the Taiba 1 and Qassim 1 power plants. These plants are set to add up to 3.8GW of power capacity to the grid, further showcasing GE Vernova’s growing influence in the global energy sector.
Conclusion: Accelerating the Global Transition to Hydrogen and Low-Carbon Energy
The 600MW hydrogen-capable CCGT plant represents a pivotal step in Singapore’s energy transition. By integrating hydrogen into the power generation process, the project will not only reduce Singapore’s carbon emissions but also contribute to the country’s energy security and long-term sustainability goals. This collaboration between GE Vernova and YTL PowerSeraya highlights the critical role of advanced gas turbine technology in the global shift towards cleaner energy solutions.
