Germany’s Scrap Export Growth Amid Market Challenges

Germany boosted its ferrous scrap exports to third countries by 10.1% year-on-year in January-June 2025, shipping 670,080 tons. Despite this volume increase, export revenue declined by 2.6% to €252.9 million, reflecting weak global scrap prices. June alone saw exports of 102,820 tons, up 41.8% year-on-year but down 23% compared to May, generating €35.62 million.

Turkey remains the dominant export destination, receiving 400,410 tons of German scrap in the first half of 2025, a 22.2% rise year-on-year. June shipments surged 82.6% year-on-year but dipped 30.3% month-on-month to 60,250 tons. Meanwhile, exports to India declined by 8.5% year-on-year in the first half, totaling 53,850 tons.

Export Trends and Market Impact on German Scrap Industry

In 2024, Germany reduced scrap exports to third countries by 22.8% from the previous year, totaling 1.11 million tons. Turkey and India remained key markets but faced year-on-year declines of 10.8% and 73.2%, respectively. Total raw material exports, including intra-EU deliveries, dropped to 7.1 million tons, the lowest since 2006. The export value decreased to €3.9 billion from €4.2 billion in 2023, underscoring market challenges.

SuperMetalPrice Commentary:

Germany’s scrap export volume growth contrasts with falling revenues, highlighting global price pressures on ferrous scrap. Turkey’s sustained demand underpins export volumes, but price volatility limits profitability. As the global scrap market adjusts, German suppliers must navigate fluctuating prices and evolving demand. Monitoring Turkey and India’s import trends will remain critical for forecasting Germany’s scrap sector performance.
