The US Department of Energy (DOE) has extended the export authorization for the Golden Pass LNG export project. This project, a $10 billion joint venture between QatarEnergy and ExxonMobil, is located in Sabine Pass, Texas. The extension supports efforts to enhance American energy capabilities and streamline the liquefied natural gas (LNG) export review process.
Key Development in LNG Exporting
The extension granted by the DOE fits into ongoing initiatives to boost US energy dominance. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright stated that this decision aligns with efforts to strengthen energy exports. It marks the third LNG-related permit under President Donald Trump’s administration. Prior approvals included Commonwealth LNG’s export permit on February 14 and a decision on February 28 to address LNG as bunkering fuel.
Wright emphasized, “Exporting US LNG supports American jobs, strengthens national security, and solidifies America’s position as a world energy leader. President Trump’s pledge to restore energy dominance is being fulfilled with today’s permit extension.”
The Golden Pass LNG Export Project
The Golden Pass LNG export project is currently under construction and set to begin operations later this year. Once completed, the terminal will become the ninth large-scale LNG export facility in the US. It will have a daily capacity to export 2.57 billion cubic feet of natural gas in LNG form.
This facility holds significance as it was the first project approved for LNG exports to non-free trade agreement countries under the Trump administration. It will play a critical role in expanding the US’s LNG export market. The terminal will have three new liquefaction trains, each with an output of 5.2 million metric tons per year. This will contribute to an annual output of 18 million tonnes of LNG.
Located 16 kilometers south of Port Arthur, Texas, the Golden Pass LNG terminal will feature five large storage tanks. Each tank will hold 155,000 cubic meters. Additionally, two marine berths will accommodate some of the world’s largest LNG carriers.
Strengthening US Energy Security
The Golden Pass LNG export project supports the US’s strategy to expand LNG export capabilities. It will help secure reliable energy supplies while enhancing US energy security. Additionally, it will solidify the US’s role as a global energy leader.
