Kanyika Niobium Project in Malawi receives a one-year extension for operations, now set to begin by 27 September 2025. This delay is attributed to the ongoing negotiations of a mine development agreement with the Malawian government.
As Africa’s first niobium mine, Kanyika will export niobium and tantalum oxides to western markets. Globe Metals and Mining plans a two-phase development, with phase 1 expected to start in early 2026 and phase 2 in the third quarter of 2028.
Once operational, the mine aims to produce 3,250 tonnes of niobium and 140 tonnes of tantalum annually over its 25-year lifespan, which may be extended. Niobium’s significance spans critical industries, including military, aerospace, and emerging sectors like quantum electronics and electric vehicles.
