Government Grants One-Year Extension for Malawi’s Kanyika Niobium Project

The Government of Malawi has granted a one-year extension for the Kanyika Niobium Project, now allowing operations to begin no later than 27 September 2025. The extension comes as Globe Metals & Mining continues to negotiate a comprehensive mine development agreement with authorities in Malawi. Originally scheduled to commence sooner, the delay reflects the complexity of securing final regulatory approvals and establishing contractual terms for the landmark project.

Africa’s First Niobium Mine Targets Western Markets

Once operational, the Kanyika mine will become Africa’s first niobium and tantalum production site, positioning Malawi as a strategic supplier of critical minerals to Western markets. Globe Metals & Mining has outlined a two-phase development plan. Phase one is expected to begin in early 2026, followed by phase two in the third quarter of 2028. The company has emphasized the project’s potential to attract foreign investment and strengthen Malawi’s role in global critical mineral supply chains.

Production Capacity and Strategic Importance

According to current projections, the mine will produce 3,250 tonnes of niobium and 140 tonnes of tantalum annually over an estimated lifespan of 25 years, with possible extensions. These metals are essential for various high-tech and strategic applications, including aerospace, military technology, electric vehicles, and quantum computing. The Kanyika project is thus seen as a potential game-changer in the global niobium market, traditionally dominated by Brazil.
