Novelis and Velux Group’s Strategic Partnership for Low-Carbon Aluminum Supply
Novelis, a leader in aluminum recycling and rolling, has secured a multi-year commercial agreement with the Velux Group. The Danish-based Velux, known for its roof windows and accessories, will now receive aluminum containing at least 70% recycled content. This aluminum is specifically designed for use in roof window production.
This collaboration marks a significant step towards reducing the carbon footprint of Velux products. It highlights the growing trend of sustainability in the construction materials industry. This agreement reinforces the companies’ shared commitment to reducing CO2 emissions. They aim to achieve 3 kilograms or less CO2eq per kilogram of flat-rolled aluminum by 2030.
Sustainable Aluminum for a Circular Economy
The agreement builds upon the initial letter of intent signed in 2022. It formalizes the transition to low-carbon aluminum. Klaus Lorentzen, Senior Vice President of Products and Innovation at Velux Group, emphasized that the new material will not only reduce carbon emissions but also provide a reliable and consistent supply of roof window materials.
This supply of aluminum aligns with Velux’s decarbonization goals. These goals aim to minimize the environmental impact of its products. With over 70% recycled content in the aluminum supplied by Novelis, Velux is making strides towards achieving a sustainable future. “This is a key step in reducing Velux’s Scope 3 emissions, which account for over 98% of our carbon footprint,” said Lorentzen.
Novelis: Leading the Charge in Low-Carbon Aluminum Innovation
Novelis has long been at the forefront of advancing high-recycled-content alloys in the aluminum industry. Michael Hahne, Vice President of Commercial for Novelis Europe, stated that this partnership with Velux demonstrates the company’s leadership in driving sustainable aluminum solutions. Indeed, Novelis’ efforts are part of its broader 3×30 Vision. This initiative aims to make the company the world’s lowest-emissions provider of flat-rolled aluminum by 2030.
Since 2022, Novelis and Velux have collaborated to steadily increase the recycled content in the aluminum used for Velux products. As of now, more than 50% of the aluminum provided by Novelis has been replaced with recycled content. There are future plans to continue this trend.
SuperMetalPrice Commentary:
The partnership between Novelis and Velux Group marks an important development in the transition to a more sustainable construction materials market. Aluminum, a key component in many industries, has a significant environmental footprint. However, as seen in this collaboration, the industry is increasingly prioritizing circular economy principles. Recycling, in particular, is being emphasized to reduce emissions and environmental impact.
As more companies aim for net-zero emissions, partnerships like these between Novelis and Velux pave the way for new, more sustainable materials. It is clear that industries like construction and manufacturing are becoming more attuned to the need for environmental responsibility. The drive for lower carbon footprints will likely accelerate demand for recycled materials and low-carbon alternatives. Consequently, this agreement is a notable milestone in the broader shift towards sustainable practices.
