EnergyAustralia has received approval for the A$1 billion Mt Piper Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project. This marks a key milestone in New South Wales’ (NSW) renewable energy transition. Construction will begin in 2026. The project aligns with the state’s goal to replace coal-fired power with clean energy solutions.
Project Overview: Mt Piper BESS and Grid Stability
The Mt Piper BESS will be located near Lithgow, NSW. It will have a storage capacity of 500 MW/2 GWh. This is enough to power over 200,000 homes. At peak capacity, the system will supply power to 320,000 homes and businesses for up to four hours. It will store excess electricity generated during off-peak hours and provide energy during high-demand periods, such as mornings and evenings when renewable sources are less reliable.
This project aims to stabilize the electricity grid and reduce reliance on fossil fuel-based power. By offering a cleaner, more reliable energy source, it will support NSW’s renewable energy transition. The Mt Piper BESS will use existing infrastructure at the Mt Piper power station, ensuring a faster and more efficient setup.
Economic and Community Benefits: Job Creation and Investment
The Mt Piper BESS project will create 177 construction jobs. It will provide a significant economic boost to Lithgow. EnergyAustralia will also invest A$2 million in community initiatives in the region, ensuring local residents directly benefit from the project. This investment supports EnergyAustralia’s commitment to integrating renewable energy solutions with regional growth.
The Lake Lyell Pumped Hydro Project: Further Supporting NSW’s Energy Transition
Alongside the Mt Piper BESS, EnergyAustralia is developing the Lake Lyell pumped hydro project. Located near Lithgow, the A$335 million project will have a capacity of 335 MW, providing energy for up to eight hours. It will power 150,000 homes. The project is classified as Critical State Significant Infrastructure (CSSI) and plays a key role in NSW’s renewable energy strategy, enhancing energy storage and generation as the state moves away from coal.
The Mt Piper BESS and Lake Lyell pumped hydro projects are essential for the future of NSW’s renewable energy sector. They will help balance intermittent renewable generation and ensure grid stability.
