
Ramaco’s Strategic Rare Earth Elements Stockpile Plan
Coal producer Ramaco Resources (NASDAQ: METC, METCB) is setting up a strategic stockpile of rare earth elements (REE) and critical minerals at its Brook mine in Wyoming. The stockpile will address both private and public sector needs for secure access to these vital materials. The move is part of a broader effort to reduce reliance on foreign supply chains, particularly China’s dominance in the production and refining of REEs and critical minerals. According to Ramaco’s announcement, the company has partnered with a “nationally recognized” commodity advisor to establish the terminal.
Wyoming’s Brook Mine: A Key Source for Critical Minerals
Brook mine, located in Wyoming, is home to one of North America’s largest unconventional REE deposits. This site, known for its reserves of scandium, gallium, germanium, and heavy REEs, will now be a focal point in the U.S.’s push to rebuild its domestic supply chain for critical minerals. The U.S. Department of Energy has identified the Brook mine as a key site for ensuring the availability of critical minerals that are essential for defense, energy transition, and advanced manufacturing. Notably, the mine is also believed to hold significant quantities of dysprosium, terbium, neodymium, and praseodymium, all crucial for making permanent magnets used in renewable energy applications and defense systems.
Ramaco has set its sights on expanding Brook’s output, with plans to nearly triple its rare earth and critical mineral oxide production. The company intends to increase production to about 3,400 short tons annually from an earlier target of 1,240 tons. This expansion aligns with Ramaco’s broader goal to increase coal production to 5 million short tons per year.
Critical Minerals for the Energy Transition and Defense
The U.S. is ramping up its efforts to lessen dependence on China for critical minerals. Brook’s vast mineral reserves could play a pivotal role in the transition to renewable energy and the production of advanced technologies. Materials such as scandium and gallium are essential for the development of advanced defense systems, semiconductors, and electric vehicles. These minerals, once mined at Brook, could significantly bolster America’s mineral security, making the U.S. less vulnerable to supply chain disruptions.
