New Technology to Boost Recycling Efficiency

German aluminium producer Speira has announced an €11 million investment to enhance its recycling capabilities. The company will install four new tiltable rotary furnaces at its Grevenbroich and Töging facilities in Germany. These advanced furnaces will address challenges in recycling lower-grade aluminium scrap, which often contains contaminants. Equipped with advanced burner technology and automated charging systems, the new furnaces are designed to optimize metal yield while minimizing carbon emissions in the recycling process.

Supporting a Circular Economy

Speira’s investment reflects its commitment to sustainability and resource efficiency. Ralf Koring, head of Speira’s recycling services, emphasized the company’s goal to recycle all aluminium-containing materials, not just high-purity scrap. The new furnaces will help achieve this by enabling the recycling of heavily contaminated scrap and aluminium dross, which has previously been difficult to process. The phased installation will begin in May 2024 at the Grevenbroich plant and continue through 2026.

Expanding Global Aluminium Processing Capacity

In addition to the German upgrades, Speira is also investing €35 million in its Holmestrand facility in Norway. This investment will increase the plant’s capacity by 22,000 tonnes of aluminium scrap annually. These investments in both Germany and Norway are part of Speira’s strategy to strengthen its recycling operations and maintain competitiveness in the global aluminium market, where demand for recycled materials continues to rise.

Sustainability and Market Leadership

Speira’s strategic investments highlight its dedication to environmental sustainability. By expanding its recycling capacity, the company aims to reduce waste and lower its carbon footprint. This reinforces Speira’s position as a responsible player in the global aluminium market and supports the transition towards a more sustainable, circular economy. The upgrades also position the company to meet growing market demand for high-quality recycled aluminium.
