Titomic Limited, an Australian-based company, has co-developed the SAE International Cold Spray Additive Manufacturing Specification (AMS 7057), marking a pivotal step toward standardizing Cold Spray technology for aerospace applications. The new standard is expected to drive broader adoption of Cold Spray in highly regulated sectors such as aerospace and defense.
A Milestone in Cold Spray Commercialization
The collaboration between Titomic and SAE International, which began in February 2023, resulted in the creation of AMS 7057, a specification that outlines the use of Cold Spray technology, specifically Titomic’s Kinetic Fusion, for additive manufacturing. Cold Spray, a process known for its ability to create high-quality metal coatings and repair components without melting the material, has now gained a formal standard that aligns with the stringent requirements of the aerospace and defense industries.
Certification Streamlining and Industry Adoption
With AMS 7057 in effect, companies within aerospace and defense will benefit from a streamlined certification process, making it easier to integrate Cold Spray technology into their manufacturing and repair operations. Titomic’s Kinetic Fusion Cold Spray technology offers significant advantages in terms of efficiency, sustainability, and precision, especially in the production of lightweight components and the repair of critical military assets.
In addition to the potential applications in commercial aerospace, Titomic has already begun collaborations with multiple aircraft manufacturers to incorporate Cold Spray technology into their operations. The technology is also drawing the interest of defense contractors for applications in military equipment repair and lightweight component production.
Securing Government Support for Innovation and Domestic Manufacturing
The development of AMS 7057 also enhances Cold Spray’s position to receive U.S. government support. With the new standard, Titomic’s technology aligns with key initiatives aimed at fostering innovation in domestic manufacturing, such as U.S. Department of Defense contracts for military repairs and NASA programs focusing on aerospace components. This positions Titomic to not only expand its commercial presence but also to secure funding and support from government-backed initiatives to strengthen supply chains and manufacturing capabilities in the U.S.
Jim Simpson, President of Titomic USA, commented on the strategic importance of the new standard, highlighting that SAE AMS7057 compliance places Titomic in an advantageous position to capture government-backed contracts and opportunities, including those related to domestic innovation and defense sector needs.
