US-Backed Consortium Pursues Rubaya Coltan Mine Rights

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is negotiating mineral rights for the Rubaya coltan mine with a consortium led by Gentry Beach, a Trump ally and chair of America First Global. This $500 million project aims to fund US-backed peace initiatives in eastern Congo. Beach partners with Swiss trader Mercuria to ensure coltan production flows legally through Rwanda, where a new smelter is planned.

President Felix Tshisekedi proposes mineral access in exchange for US support to suppress the M23 rebellion and stabilize the volatile region. The negotiations unfold alongside a US- and Qatar-brokered peace accord between DRC and Rwanda, targeting ceasefire and militia disarmament. This initiative reflects a strategic US effort to counter China’s growing influence in African minerals.

Rubaya mine sits in eastern DRC, a region historically marked by conflict and humanitarian crises, with millions displaced. The coltan ore extracted here is essential for producing tantalum and niobium, critical metals for electronics, aerospace, and defense industries worldwide.

Tantalum’s applications include smartphones, computers, and missile components, while niobium strengthens pipelines and jet engines. The US Geological Survey reports that the DRC supplied 40% of global coltan in 2023, making it a cornerstone of the global technology supply chain.
