UK and Poland to Sign New Security and Defence Treaty

UK-Poland, Security and Defence Treaty

Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation on Defence and Support for Ukraine

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer visited Poland on Friday to discuss key issues regarding border security and military support, marking a step toward enhanced bilateral cooperation between the UK and Poland. During his visit, Starmer met with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk to review NATO cooperation, migration issues, and international security, as well as to address growing concerns surrounding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Starmer’s visit, which followed a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Ukraine, underscores the UK’s commitment to supporting its European allies. The two leaders agreed to sign a new bilateral security and defence cooperation agreement later this year, emphasizing further military collaboration, particularly in the Baltic and North Seas. They also announced the opening of a joint program office in Bristol to oversee a £4 billion partnership aimed at delivering the next generation of air defense systems to Poland.

Addressing Antisemitism and International Security Concerns

In addition to his diplomatic discussions, Starmer visited the Auschwitz memorial site in Poland, expressing his “sheer horror” at the atrocities committed there during World War II. He vowed to confront the rising tide of antisemitism, especially in the wake of the Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023, which sparked the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Starmer’s visit coincides with growing concerns in the UK regarding the rise of antisemitism, an issue that has plagued his Labour Party, particularly since the leadership of his predecessor, Jeremy Corbyn.

The UK’s efforts to strengthen its security ties with Poland highlight the importance of international alliances in addressing both regional and global challenges, from military defense to combating discrimination.
