Mysterious Disease Sweeps Through Kwango Province
An unidentified disease has struck the southwestern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), leading to at least 67 confirmed deaths over a two-week period, local health authorities reported. The fatalities were recorded from November 10 to 25 in the Panzi health zone, part of Kwango province. The disease exhibits symptoms including fever, headache, cough, and anaemia, with health minister Apollinaire Yumba urging caution to prevent further spread. As local authorities work to control the situation, a team of epidemiological experts has been dispatched to the region to collect samples and determine the exact cause of the outbreak.
Death Toll and Investigation Ongoing
The situation is still developing, and the death toll could be higher, with estimates ranging from 67 to 143 fatalities. Deputy Governor Rémy Saki confirmed that the death toll is under investigation, and health experts are working to track the disease’s progression. In the meantime, residents have been advised not to touch the deceased to avoid contamination, and local officials have called on both national and international partners to send medical supplies to assist in addressing the crisis.
Impact of the Mpox Epidemic on the DRC
The DRC is already struggling with the ongoing mpox epidemic, which has claimed more than 1,000 lives and affected over 47,000 individuals. The additional strain of this unknown disease only complicates the country’s already fragile healthcare system. While the investigation continues, global health bodies such as the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) are monitoring the situation closely, with further consultations expected to manage both the unknown disease and the mpox epidemic.
