Nippon Steel Advances Carbon Reduction with $6 Billion Electric Arc Furnace Investment

Nippon Steel announced a $6.05 billion investment in electric arc furnaces (EAFs) at three Japanese plants to curb carbon emissions. The company plans to build a new EAF at its Kyushu Works and expand capacity at two other facilities. This investment supports a combined annual capacity of 2.9 million tons.

The Japanese government will subsidize 251 billion yen toward this project under the Green Transformation Promotion Act. Nippon Steel’s selection reflects its leadership in decarbonization efforts. This funding accelerates Nippon Steel’s Carbon Neutral Vision 2050 and underpins its transition toward sustainable steelmaking.

 

Electric Arc Furnace Investment Drives Nippon Steel’s Carbon Neutral Vision 2050

Nippon Steel achieved a 43% carbon emissions reduction in a test furnace at East Nippon Works last year. This breakthrough validates its ongoing super-innovative technologies developed under the Carbon Neutral Vision 2050 initiative. The new EAF projects complement these technologies by increasing production capacity with greener processes.

Meanwhile, Nippon Steel’s partnership with US Steel announced in May signals an ambitious global expansion. This collaboration could strengthen the company’s position in clean steel production worldwide.
