Guinea’s Bauxite Exports Soar 23% in Q3 2025

Guinea’s bauxite exports saw a remarkable 23% year-on-year (YoY) increase in the third quarter of 2025 (Q3 2025). According to the Ministry of Mines and Geology, the West African country shipped a total of 39.41 million tonnes (mt) of bauxite, up from 32mt in the same period last year. This surge highlights the country’s key role as one of the world’s largest bauxite producers, despite facing significant operational challenges.

The majority of these exports were sent to China, which remains Guinea’s largest customer. However, the export growth is not without complications. The monthly export average of 13.14mt during Q3 marked a 19% drop compared to the first half of the year. This decline was primarily attributed to seasonal weather disruptions, including heavy rains that impacted both mining operations and port activities in Guinea.

Operational Challenges and Regulatory Uncertainty in Guinea’s Bauxite Sector

Despite the impressive YoY growth, Guinea’s bauxite export performance reflects a complex mix of challenges. The government’s recent actions, such as revoking mining licenses and pushing companies to build alumina refineries, have introduced operational uncertainty. While these moves aim to add value to the country’s resources, they also create a more unpredictable business environment for foreign investors.

Bernabe Sanchez, an independent mineral economist focused on Guinea, pointed out that Guinea’s annual bauxite output is likely to reach around 180 million tonnes, well below the first-half pace but still over 20% higher than last year’s record. This highlights the resilience of the sector despite setbacks.

The dominance of Chinese companies in Guinea’s bauxite market is also notable. In Q3, Chinese firms controlled 54.6% of the country’s bauxite exports, with SMB-Winning leading the charge at 17.51mt. CHALCO and CDM-CHINE followed suit, reinforcing China’s strong influence over Guinea’s bauxite industry. Guinea’s bauxite exports account for roughly one-third of China’s bauxite imports, further solidifying Beijing’s control over the global aluminium supply chain.

SuperMetalPrice Commentary:

Guinea’s strong bauxite export growth in Q3 2025 is a testament to the country’s ongoing significance in the global mining industry, particularly in the context of China’s expanding aluminium demand. Despite operational setbacks and government regulations, Guinea continues to play a vital role in shaping the global aluminium market. The future will depend on how the country navigates regulatory pressures and maintains its position as a key supplier to China. The Simandou iron ore project, which is set to begin shipments soon, could further elevate Guinea’s importance as a critical resource supplier for China’s industrial needs.
