Oklo and KHNP Forge Strategic Nuclear Partnership

Oklo, a leading company in advanced nuclear technology, has entered a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP). They focus on advancing Oklo’s Aurora powerhouse design. Additionally, they aim to accelerate the development of advanced nuclear technology.

The agreement outlines a clear cooperation framework. Both companies will focus on enhancing the design, verification, and deployment of the Aurora powerhouse. The goal is to refine manufacturability and assess major equipment needs. Furthermore, they aim to improve supply chain development for balance-of-plant systems. These efforts intend to ensure that the powerhouse design meets global standards for efficiency, safety, and scalability.

 

Key Areas of Collaboration Between Oklo and KHNP

Under the MoU, Oklo and KHNP will work together on early-stage project development. This includes conducting assessments on manufacturability, evaluating constructability, and addressing supply chain development for critical plant systems. Both companies will also explore joint strategies for optimizing major equipment for large-scale deployment.

Oklo has already set its sights on deploying the 75MWe Aurora powerhouse at the Idaho National Laboratory site. The company is navigating the complex licensing procedures while working closely with the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). Oklo plans to submit a Combined License Application (COLA) later this year. This application aims to streamline construction and operation permits. The successful progression of the COLA will allow Oklo to accelerate the development of its growing order pipeline. This pipeline is expected to exceed 14 GW.

The partnership between Oklo and KHNP carries significant strategic value. Oklo, a pioneer in small modular reactors (SMRs), can benefit greatly from KHNP’s vast experience in the nuclear industry. KHNP’s 50 years of experience in building nuclear power plants brings valuable expertise to Oklo’s project. The collaboration is expected to drive faster development. They focus on critical factors such as manufacturability, supply chain logistics, and overall construction efficiency.

Oklo’s CEO Jacob DeWitte highlighted the importance of this partnership, stating, “Partnering with KHNP, one of the most accomplished nuclear builders in the world, offers significant opportunities. They align on key execution factors such as manufacturability, constructability, and supply chain development. Their extensive experience in delivering projects at scale will complement our efforts. This collaboration will help us move efficiently toward commercialization.”

KHNP’s CEO Whang Ju-ho also expressed confidence in the partnership. He emphasized that combining the strengths of both companies would create strong synergy in the design, construction, and operation of advanced nuclear technology. He noted that this collaboration would help both companies achieve world-class competitiveness in the global nuclear market.
