The Australian federal government has committed up to A$26 million to green metals startup Element Zero. This funding supports a pioneering electricity-powered green iron processing pilot. The investment comes from the Future Made in Australia Innovation Fund. The Australian Renewable Energy Agency administers the fund. The initiative aims to accelerate the commercialization of zero-coal ironmaking technologies.


Scaling Electrochemical Processing

Element Zero’s A$53.6 million project targets high-purity, low-emissions iron production. It uses varied domestic feedstocks, including hematite and magnetite iron ores. The core innovation relies on an electrochemical ironmaking process. This method replaces metallurgical coal with electricity and molten salts.

The initial project phase funds a pilot plant. The facility produces approximately 1 tonne of iron daily. Subject to formal review and operational validation, the company will scale output. A secondary phase targets 10 tonnes per day, proving commercial viability.


Grid-Friendly Decarbonization

Traditional blast furnaces require intense, constant heat. In contrast, Element Zero’s process operates between 400 and 450°C. This lower thermal threshold significantly reduces baseline energy requirements. It also enables the facility to ramp production dynamically.

This flexibility allows the plant to run entirely on intermittent renewable energy. Wind, solar, and hydropower power the facility. By decoupling iron production from fossil fuels, the technology offers a scalable template. It supports the global steel industry’s net-zero transition, positioning Australia to export processed green iron.
