BMW Group has announced a partnership with Redwood Materials to enhance the recycling of lithium-ion batteries from its electric vehicles (EVs). This agreement, revealed on Monday, grants Redwood access to over 700 BMW facilities across the United States, including dealerships and distribution centers, to collect end-of-life batteries.

Strategic Recycling Expansion
Redwood’s operations will be strategically located near BMW’s Spartanburg and Woodruff manufacturing plants in South Carolina. Both companies are committed to establishing robust recycling initiatives in the region. BMW plans to introduce at least six new EV models in the US by 2030, with a significant investment of $1 billion aimed at retrofitting its Spartanburg plant for electric SUVs by 2026. Additionally, the Woodruff facility will support battery supply from a new $700 million assembly plant slated to begin operations in 2026.

This partnership further expands Redwood’s network of collaborations, which includes a recent agreement with Ultium, a joint venture between General Motors and LG Chem, focused on recycling production waste expected to yield 10,000 metric tonnes of scrap annually.
