Brazilian Lithium Exports Surge 64% in September as Key Miners Resume Shipments

Brazil exported 34,130 metric tonnes of 5.5% grade spodumene concentrate in September. This represents a sharp 64% month-on-month increase. Renewed export activity from key domestic producers drove this growth. The rebound reflects stable operations at major miners, including Sigma Lithium, AMG, and CBL. Individual shipping schedules heavily shape Brazil’s raw material flows to global battery manufacturing hubs.

Sigma Lithium and Regional Producers Fuel Supply Recovery

Sigma Lithium anchored the monthly export recovery. The company shipped 11,000 tonnes of 5.5% spodumene concentrate in September. This volume accounted for nearly a third of Brazil’s total lithium exports. AMG contributed the largest individual share at 12,960 tonnes. Meanwhile, CBL added 9,900 tonnes in its fourth export batch of the year.

This month-on-month growth follows earlier supply disruptions and strategic export pacing. Year-on-year comparisons show a 48.8% decline against September 2025. However, that historical baseline was unusually high. Sigma had released roughly 60,000 tonnes of accumulated inventory during that period. Recent legal disputes and mine disruptions affected Sigma’s Grota do Cirilo complex. Nevertheless, operations have since received court clearance to proceed.

Asian Refineries Dominant as Trade Pacing Drives Export Volatility

China remained the dominant destination for Brazilian spodumene. Chinese refiners received virtually all major shipments exported during the month. A single batch of 270 tonnes went to the United States. This smaller shipment was likely sourced from AMG.

Brazilian lithium supply curves reflect discrete shipping intervals from a few active producers. Unlike other regions, mining output here is not continuous. For example, CBL exports only a few times per year. Consequently, total monthly output depends on vessel loading schedules rather than spot market shifts. Sigma Lithium is now advancing expansion plans for higher long-term capacity. As a result, Brazil’s role in supplying raw spodumene to Asia remains critical.

SuperMetalPrice Commentary:

September’s export rebound underlines the structural reality of Brazil’s lithium sector: physical export volume remains tightly tied to discrete operational milestones and shipment schedules from a small cluster of miners rather than macro demand signals. While China continues to absorb the vast majority of Brazilian spodumene, any localized legal, environmental, or logistics delays at flagship operations instantly ripple through month-on-month trade flows.

For global procurement managers and battery material traders, Brazil represents an increasingly important non-Australian source of hard-rock spodumene. However, until additional expansion phases come fully online and broaden the producer base, buyers must navigate periodic supply lumpiness and account for producer-specific operational schedules when hedging spot availability.
