China May Ease Restrictions on Black Mass Imports

Black Mass

Chinese authorities are considering easing restrictions on importing certain black mass specifications, reflecting its growing recognition as a valuable recyclable resource rather than waste. Currently, only small test quantities are imported, but future approvals will likely be limited to high-quality products.

Despite falling prices for key battery metals like nickel and cobalt, black mass prices have increased due to heightened competition among South Korean recycling companies and rising demand from Chinese buyers. In June, CIF prices for NCA black mass were estimated at $4,421 per ton in South Korea and $4,362 per ton in Southeast Asia.

This potential policy shift underscores China’s strategic move to secure essential materials for its burgeoning battery and recycling industries, aligning with its broader goals of sustainability and technological advancement.
