China’s steel exports rose by 0.3% in August to reach 10.15 million tonnes, according to data from the China Iron and Steel Association. This was a 6.8% increase compared to August 2025. However, cumulative shipments for the first eight months fell 3% year-on-year to 75.15 million tonnes. Chinese steelmakers continue to lean heavily on overseas markets. They absorb excess domestic supply amid a sluggish property and construction sector at home.

Export Trends and Pricing Pressures

The average price for Chinese steel exports in August stood at $722.20 per tonne. This marked a marginal 0.9% increase from the previous month. Over the January-August period, total steel exports reached 75.15 million tonnes. This was down 3% from the same period in 2025. The downward trend reflects persistent structural adjustments within China’s industrial base. Mills face mounting pressure to balance overcapacity with softening domestic consumption. Meanwhile, steel imports into China dropped 2.5% in August to 434,000 tonnes. The eight-month total reached 3.57 million tonnes, representing a 10.15% decline year-on-year.

Iron Ore Imports and Raw Material Reliance

In contrast to finished steel products, China’s imports of iron ore continued to climb. In August, the country imported 108.54 million tonnes of iron ore. This represented a 0.4% monthly increase and a 3.1% rise year-on-year. However, the average import price fell 5.1% from July to $95.50 per tonne. This price drop eased some cost pressures for domestic mills. For the first eight months, total iron ore imports rose 5.5% to 845.27 million tonnes. The high volume of raw material intake underscores the structural reliance of Chinese steelmakers on imported iron ore. Organizations like CISA regularly urge producers to strengthen their upstream supply chain resilience.

Global Market Implications

The resilience of Chinese steel shipments continues to influence global pricing dynamics. It also drives trade policy debates across major importing regions like Europe, Southeast Asia, and Latin America. Domestic demand inside China remains constrained. Overseas shipments act as a primary pressure valve for regional mills. They often depress international spot prices and trigger trade defense measures from competing jurisdictions. Market participants closely monitor monthly export volumes. These volumes serve as a leading indicator of supply pressure on global trade routes and domestic manufacturing margins.

○ Watch Item: Monitor monthly Chinese customs data for shifts in export volumes and iron ore inventory levels at major ports.

SuperMetalPrice Commentary:

China’s ongoing reliance on steel exports to manage domestic overcapacity keeps global trade tensions elevated. While monthly volumes remain near historic highs, the slight year-to-date contraction suggests that international trade barriers and tighter anti-dumping checks are beginning to bite.
