European foreign ministers gathered in Paris on Wednesday, underlining Europe‘s essential role in Ukraine‘s future peace process. This meeting, held ahead of the Munich Security Conference, followed news of US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin’s agreement to hold immediate peace talks. The European ministers emphasized that any agreement on Ukraine’s future must include Europe’s active participation.
EU’s Involvement Vital for Long-Term Peace
Ukraine’s future security is inextricably linked to Europe’s, said Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha. He stressed that only by working together with European allies can Ukraine achieve a just and lasting peace. Sybiha described Ukraine’s security and Europe’s security as “indivisible,” reinforcing the need for Europe’s engagement in the peace process. Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski also voiced strong support for Ukraine. He noted that Poland would continue to push for intensified military assistance and further sanctions on Russia. He mentioned that peace in Ukraine requires active involvement from Europe.
Global Reactions and US Defense Policy
The European ministers’ statements coincided with news that US President Trump and Russian President Putin had agreed to meet face-to-face. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Putin was open to receiving American officials in Russia. Meanwhile, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth dismissed the notion of granting Ukraine NATO membership. This membership would be part of a security guarantee to end the war with Russia.
