Mining giant Fortescue has marked a major technological milestone. Specifically, the company completed the commercial sale of over 40 tonnes of treated copper concentrate. This material was processed using its proprietary Toowong Process. At its demonstration facility in Brisbane, Australia, the treatment successfully reduced arsenic levels from up to 7% down to below 0.25%. Consequently, Fortescue is establishing a viable processing pathway to unlock high-arsenic deposits essential for the energy transition. Furthermore, it achieves this without relying on traditional, energy-intensive smelting or roasting routes.

Solving Copper Concentrate Quality Constraints

Global copper demand is accelerating rapidly due to renewable energy expansion, grid upgrades, and electric vehicle production. As a result, miners must increasingly develop lower-grade and higher-impurity ore bodies. However, high levels of arsenic present severe operational and regulatory challenges for custom smelters worldwide. Typically, smelters impose steep financial penalties on dirty concentrates. In fact, they often reject shipments that exceed strict environmental limits altogether. Moreover, traditional removal methods like pyrometallurgical roasting require heavy capital investment and consume high amounts of energy.

To solve this issue, the Toowong Process provides a low-temperature, low-pressure hydrometallurgical alternative. Therefore, it extracts arsenic directly from copper concentrate before shipment. By delivering cleaner feedstocks to global smelters, this technology allows mining operators to bypass complex blending requirements. In addition, it helps producers avoid costly penalization fees.

Unlocking Stranded Copper Resources Globally

Fortescue acquired the Toowong Process in 2022 to address bottlenecking across the copper industry. For example, one immediate application being tested is the Cañariaco copper project in Peru. In this location, elevated arsenic content has historically complicated off-take strategies. Consequently, applying this technology at scale could reclassify marginal or stranded copper resources into commercially marketable assets.

Beyond its internal development portfolio, Fortescue is pursuing ongoing process optimization. Ultimately, this work aims to drive down operational expenditures over time. As a result, the commercial deployment of hydrometallurgical pre-treatment signals a structural shift in mineral processing. Overall, it offers custom smelters higher-quality feedstocks while giving miners greater flexibility in off-take agreements.

SuperMetalPrice Commentary:

The commercialization of Fortescue’s Toowong Process addresses one of the most critical structural issues in the copper supply chain: deteriorating ore grades and rising impurity levels. As major global copper deposits become increasingly complex, the ability to economically remove arsenic at low temperatures will dictate which greenfield projects can achieve bankability.

For copper buyers and smelters, hydrometallurgical pre-treatment offers a crucial hedge against tightening environmental regulations and concentrate supply deficits. If Fortescue can scale this process cost-effectively, it will expand the pool of clean copper concentrate available to international markets without requiring capital-intensive smelter modifications.
