Gold Price

Gold prices staged a sharp recovery from sub-$4,000 lows following the Federal Reserve’s decision to maintain interest rates, even as geopolitical tensions escalated in the Middle East.

Federal Reserve Holds Rates Amid Split Committee

The Federal Reserve kept its target range at 3.5% to 3.75% during its fifth consecutive meeting, though a 9-3 dissenting vote revealed deep internal division over inflation pressures. Cleveland Fed president Beth Hammack, Minneapolis’ Neel Kashkari, and Dallas’ Lorie Logan all favored an immediate quarter-point increase, signaling heightened hawkish sentiment among policymakers. Market-implied odds for a hike had hovered near 38% prior to the announcement, driving morning volatility across precious metals as traders weighed persistent macroeconomic uncertainties and rising energy costs.

Geopolitical Escalation and Market Rebound

Overnight ballistic missile strikes by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard against a US airbase in Jordan, alongside subsequent US and Saudi Arabian counter-operations, failed to ignite safe-haven buying in the traditional manner. Instead, surging Brent crude prices above $90 a barrel fueled inflation expectations, initially pressuring bullion down to $3,993.80 an ounce. However, the unexpected hold by the Federal Reserve triggered an immediate rebound, lifting spot gold by 1.3% to $4,081.10 and driving silver up 2.5% to $58.78 an ounce as precious metals equities recovered from their morning troughs.
