Hydro to Build New Aluminium Wire Rod Casthouse in Norway

Hydro Al
  • Hydro has announced plans to build a new aluminium wire rod casthouse at its Karmoy facility in Norway.
  • The 110,000 t/yr plant will support Europe’s growing demand for low-carbon materials in energy infrastructure.
  • This project represents Hydro’s largest domestic investment in over a decade and is scheduled to begin operations in early 2028.

Aluminium Wire Rod Casthouse to Support Power Cable Demand

The aluminium wire rod casthouse will produce wire rods for Europe’s expanding power cable network. Hydro aims to meet the material needs of energy grids shifting toward renewable sources. Aluminium offers high conductivity while weighing only half as much as copper. Therefore, it enables more efficient and lightweight transmission infrastructure. In addition, aluminium’s durability and recyclability support Europe’s sustainability goals. Hydro emphasized that low-carbon aluminium will be the core product of this new facility.

Market Signals Growing Demand for Low-Carbon Aluminium

Hydro has reported steady growth in sales of low-carbon aluminium over the past two years. This trend continues despite weak global aluminium demand overall. According to CEO Eivind Kallevik, customers are increasingly prioritizing renewable-compatible materials. As a result, Hydro sees the new investment as a strategic step to strengthen its role in Europe. The final investment decision for the aluminium wire rod casthouse will be made by the fourth quarter of 2025.

SuperMetalPrice Commentary

Hydro’s latest move reflects a broader industrial pivot toward low-emission materials. The aluminium wire rod casthouse is more than just a capacity expansion—it aligns with grid electrification across Europe. Hydro is positioning itself to lead in clean transmission infrastructure. This project reinforces aluminium’s rising role in energy strategy and Norway’s relevance in future supply chains.
