Maruichi Steel Tube’s New Plant Investment

Japan’s Maruichi Steel Tube announced its plan to establish a new plant for stainless steel tubes used in semiconductor equipment. The company plans to invest ¥48 billion (approximately KRW 416 billion) to secure the new plant.

Maruichi Steel Tube said it will build the 40,000-square-meter plant in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Construction is to begin in April 2025, with completion expected in 2027.

The company said this major investment is part of a long-term development plan announced in October last year. This plan aims to meet the growing demand for semiconductor equipment. The plant will primarily manufacture products used for industrial gas injection in semiconductor manufacturing processes.

Response to Expanding Semiconductor Industry in Japan

The move is seen as a response to international semiconductor companies such as TSMC and related suppliers. These companies are establishing large-scale facilities in Japan and planning to expand their local operations.

The Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported, “Maruichi Steel Tube recently acquired the former Chugoku Electric Power thermal power plant site. This site is near the headquarters of its group company, Maruichi Stainless Steel Tube, and was purchased for 3.7 billion yen. The new plant is expected to cooperate with Maruichi Stainless Steel Tube.”
