Major North American steel producers Nucor and Gerdau Long Steel North America have announced price increases. Both companies added $30 per short ton across rebar product lines. Gerdau extended price hikes to shaped and flat steel lines. Meanwhile, Nucor raised its weekly spot price for hot-rolled coil. Driven by resilient demand in energy, infrastructure, and data centers, mills are asserting pricing power. They maintain this power despite headwinds from imported steel supply.

Price Increases Take Effect Across Rebar and Structural Steel

Nucor Bar Group initiated price hikes of $30 per short ton ($33 per metric ton). This applies to all new rebar orders received after October 9. Gerdau Long Steel North America followed with an identical $30 per short ton increase on rebar orders effective October 12. Gerdau expanded the scope of its price movement. The company added $30 per short ton to most structural shaped steel products, including channels, beams, and sections. It also applied the increase to flat-rolled steel lines. Both steelmakers included price protection clauses for confirmed orders. These orders must be shipped within two weeks of the announcement dates.

Hot-Rolled Coil Spot Prices Extend Upward Trend

Nucor also raised its Consumer Spot Price (CSP) for hot-rolled coils (HRC). The company added $10 per short ton, bringing the spot offer level to $1,240 per metric ton. West Coast subsidiary California Steel Industries (CSI) adjusted its HRC spot price upward by $15 per short ton to $1,305 per metric ton. These step-up adjustments highlight steelmakers’ ongoing strategy. They aim to stabilize flat-rolled spot pricing and pass through rising scrap and operational costs to the spot market.

High-Tech Construction and Infrastructure Drive Demand Baseline

The price adjustments reflect persistent end-market consumption across key structural sectors in North America. Construction activity remains strong in data center development, energy infrastructure, and federally funded civil engineering. These sectors continue to absorb domestic mill shipments. Import volumes continue to cap rapid price spikes by offering lower-priced alternatives. Nevertheless, domestic mills leverage steady backlog volumes and firm demand fundamentals to maintain current price floors.

○ Watch Item: Track weekly import arrival volumes at major U.S. ports to determine if foreign steel price spreads erode domestic price increase acceptance.

SuperMetalPrice Commentary:

The synchronized price announcements by Nucor and Gerdau demonstrate that major domestic long steel mills retain structural pricing power, backed by durable demand from data centers and infrastructure projects. By implementing strict price protection deadlines, producers are incentivizing buyers to release pending orders and clear service center inventories.

While import availability continues to serve as an overhead resistance level, mill discipline and sustained non-residential building activity support current spot levels. Market participants should monitor scrap purchasing trends closely over the coming weeks, as rising metallic inputs could provide further justification for additional finished steel price adjustments.
