Perpetua Resources has received the final federal permit needed to move forward with the Stibnite Gold Project in Idaho. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers granted the Clean Water Act Section 404 permit, concluding an eight-year federal permitting process. With this milestone reached, Perpetua will now focus on finalizing state permits and securing financing.

A Strategic Win for U.S. Gold and Antimony Production

The Stibnite Gold Project is one of the most significant gold and antimony developments in the United States. It contains estimated reserves of 4.8 million ounces of gold and 148 million pounds of antimony. Once operational, the project is expected to produce about 450,000 ounces of gold annually for the first four years.

In addition, the project could supply approximately 35% of U.S. antimony demand over its first six years. This is especially critical as China halted antimony exports in 2024. With China controlling nearly half the global antimony output, a domestic source enhances U.S. mineral security.

Environmental Restoration and Economic Impact

Perpetua aims to restore the historically mined Stibnite site. The plan includes removing legacy tailings, improving water quality, and restoring the headwaters of the Salmon River. The project also includes reopening fish migration routes blocked for over 80 years and increasing wetland acreage and quality.

The company expects to create roughly 550 jobs in rural Idaho, providing a major economic boost. CEO Jon Cherry noted that the final permit reflects years of scientific study and government coordination. The project is now part of the FAST-41 dashboard, a federal transparency tool that tracks critical infrastructure reviews.

Perpetua Resources began the NEPA permitting process in 2016. Since then, the U.S. Forest Service and cooperating agencies, including the Army Corps, have completed extensive environmental reviews. The final Record of Decision was issued in January 2025.

The Stibnite Gold Project now stands as a model for responsible mining and environmental restoration. It highlights the growing importance of domestic production of critical minerals like antimony, essential for defense and energy technologies.
