Portland’s Battery Recycling Curbside Program Hits Major Milestone

Portland residents recycled more than 20 tons of household batteries through the city’s curbside program since June 2024. The Bureau of Planning and Sustainability (BPS) designed this service to simplify battery recycling for single-family homes and smallplexes. The initiative also aims to reduce fire risks at waste and recycling centers caused by improper battery disposal.

The program requires residents to place used batteries in clear, sealed one-quart bags on top of glass recycling bins. Batteries without “alkaline” labels must have taped ends to prevent accidents. However, the program excludes batteries from electronics like cellphones, laptops, vape pens, and other specialty devices.

The curbside battery recycling program addresses serious safety concerns posed by lithium-ion and other rechargeable batteries. These batteries can ignite if crushed or overheated during waste handling, threatening workers and the environment. Meanwhile, apartment residents and workplaces must use drop-off or mail-in options for battery recycling. The city directs them to Metro’s Recycling Information Center for suitable alternatives. Portland’s initiative demonstrates how local governments can combine convenience with environmental protection effectively.
