RWE CO2-Reduced Steel Tower at Thor Wind Farm Marks Sustainability Milestone

The RWE CO2-reduced steel tower at Thor wind farm highlights a major step in low-carbon energy infrastructure. RWE installed the offshore turbine in the Danish North Sea. The project uses reduced-emission steel and recyclable rotor blades.

The Thor wind farm will deliver 1.1GW capacity to the Danish grid. Located near Thorsminde, the site will host 72 turbines. Each turbine can generate up to 15MW. As a result, Thor ranks among Europe’s largest offshore wind developments.

RWE confirmed that construction remains on schedule. The company completed offshore foundations and substations in 2025. Meanwhile, turbine installation continues steadily toward full deployment.

 

Greener Steel and Recyclable Blades Drive Emission Reduction

The RWE CO2-reduced steel tower at Thor wind farm uses advanced materials to cut lifecycle emissions. Siemens Gamesa supplies its GreenerTower technology for 36 turbines. This solution uses steel with emissions capped at 0.7 tonnes CO2 per tonne.

Additionally, RWE will install 120 recyclable blades across 40 turbines. These blades use innovative resin systems. Therefore, operators can separate composite materials at end of life. Manufacturers can then reuse these materials in automotive and consumer products.

 

Circular Wind Technology Expands Across Europe

RWE continues to deploy circular wind technologies across its portfolio. The company already introduced recyclable blades at the Kaskasi wind farm and the Sofia wind farm. This strategy supports long-term sustainability goals.

Furthermore, the Thor project supports local economic growth. A new service base at the Port of Thorsminde will create up to 60 jobs. As a result, the project strengthens both environmental and regional development outcomes.
