Massachusetts-based startup SiTration has partnered with BHP. They will deploy a patented silicon electro-extraction technology to recover copper directly from legacy mining water. Located at BHP’s historic Copper Cities site in Arizona, this dual pilot deployment represents a major step forward. It aims to unlock an estimated $100 billion in stranded global copper without traditional, energy-intensive mining.

High-Purity Extraction Without Pretreatment

Backed by BHP Ventures and spun out from MIT, SiTration consequently uses a specialized flow-through electrowinning process. Furthermore, unlike conventional methods requiring chemical additives, SiTration applies patented electrode materials to electroplate target metals selectively. According to CEO Brendan Smith, this unique selectivity therefore enables single-step extraction. As a result, the system consistently yields LME Grade A copper cathodes that successfully achieve 99.99% purity.

The system adapts dynamically using real-time feedback loops to monitor stream composition and optimize operating conditions. It consumes only 3 to 4 kilowatt-hours of energy per kilogram of recovered copper. This efficiency lowers operating costs and makes the technology viable for low-concentration wastewater streams.

Scaling Domestic Copper Supply

The Copper Cities site produced nearly 400,000 metric tons of copper between the 1950s and 1980s. It provides an ideal testing ground for the technology. Following an initial one-month validation phase, a larger pilot will launch later this year. This second phase aims to produce up to 2 metric tons of commercial-scale copper over two months.

The extraction units are modular and highly mobile. They can be deployed directly to legacy pit lakes, operate until the resource is exhausted, and relocate easily. Approximately $40 billion of accessible stranded copper sits in the U.S. Southwest alone. This technology offers a commercial pathway to strengthen domestic supply chains amid surging demand from energy infrastructure and data center expansions.

SuperMetalPrice Commentary:

SiTration’s technology effectively bridges the gap between mining waste management and critical mineral procurement. If the commercial scalability of the BHP pilot is proven, it could disrupt the traditional copper cost curve by transforming liabilities—such as legacy pit water—into high-margin, low-carbon copper assets, providing a rapid supply response to the tightening U.S. domestic market.
