Tenaris has launched Romania’s first solar energy park, taking a major step in reducing emissions at its Kehlerash steel mill. This initiative supports the company’s decarbonization efforts and aligns with the global shift toward sustainable industrial energy.

Solar Power Project Supports Green Steel Production

Tenaris, a leading steel pipe manufacturer, has inaugurated a 20 MW solar energy park in Quelerasi, Romania. The facility will supply clean electricity, partially powering the steelmaking process and supporting green steel production. This project helps the company meet its decarbonization targets while contributing to the global push for sustainable energy solutions in heavy industries like steel production.

The $21.5 million investment was co-financed by the European Union, which contributed 30% of the funding through the EU’s Recovery and Sustainability Plan. This plan promotes the use of renewable energy across Europe and supports climate-neutral production in industries like steelmaking.

The opening ceremony was attended by Romanian government officials, energy regulators, and key company partners. This event emphasized the importance of renewable energy in industrial operations and marked a significant milestone in Tenaris’ environmental strategy.

Decarbonization as a Key Part of Tenaris’ Global Strategy

Mihaela Popescu, President of Tenaris in Eastern Europe, highlighted the project’s importance. She stated, “This initiative supports both our decarbonization goals and our customers’ sustainability objectives.” The solar energy park is part of Tenaris’ broader commitment to reducing indirect emissions and enhancing the sustainability of its operations.

The company has already launched similar clean energy projects in Italy and China. Additionally, Tenaris is building two wind farms in Argentina, further emphasizing its shift toward renewable energy sources in steel production.

Despite a 5% drop in 2024 pipe sales, Tenaris remains focused on its long-term environmental goals. In 2024, the company’s seamless pipe shipments totaled 3.08 million tons, while welded pipe shipments reached 852,000 tons. Both figures reflect reduced demand.

By integrating renewable energy into its production processes, Tenaris solidifies its position as a sustainable leader in the global steel industry.
