UK Review Targets Turkish Hot-Dip Galvanized Steel Quota

The UK Trade Remedies Authority (TRA) is reviewing the quota exemption for Turkish hot-dip galvanized sheet steel. This review follows an application by Tata Steel, the UK’s only galvanized steel producer. The company claims Turkish imports exceeded the 3% exemption threshold in the year ending November 2025.

If the TRA abolishes the exemption, Turkish HDG may fall under general quotas for other countries. The final recommendation will be published by the end of March, with changes likely taking effect on April 1. Traders and buyers already anticipate shifts in UK steel sourcing and market dynamics.

Turkey’s market share in UK HDG imports reached approximately 5.8% in 2025, part of total imports exceeding 1 million tons. Industry analysts note that quota adjustments for South Korea and Vietnam in mid-2025 pushed buyers to source more from Turkey, temporarily boosting Turkish shipments.

Implications for UK and Turkish Steel Trade

Ending the exemption could tighten supply and increase competition for UK steel buyers. Turkish exporters may need to adjust pricing and production strategies, as quota limits constrain volume. Meanwhile, UK manufacturers could benefit from reduced competition from imported Turkish HDG, strengthening local supply chains.

The move also highlights broader trends in global steel trade, where regulatory shifts can reshape market shares and commodity flows. Traders and investors should watch TRA decisions closely to anticipate price and supply changes.

SuperMetalPrice Commentary:

SuperMetalPrice expects the potential removal of Turkey’s quota exemption to create short-term volatility in the UK galvanized steel market. Manufacturers may experience supply adjustments, while Turkish exporters could face pricing pressure. Stakeholders should monitor TRA updates and evaluate sourcing strategies to manage risk effectively.
