The British government has announced plans to bring Speciality Steel UK into public ownership. The state acquisition aims to protect vital manufacturing assets that supply the defense and aerospace sectors. Official sources confirmed the decision follows the failure to find a suitable private buyer.


Liquidation and Strategic Asset Protection

Speciality Steel UK previously operated as part of Liberty Steel. The company faced severe financial distress following the collapse of Greensill Capital in 2021. It subsequently entered formal liquidation in August 2025.

SSUK operates four key production sites across the United Kingdom. These facilities are located in Rotherham, Stocksbridge, Brinsworth, and Wednesbury. Together, the plants support over 1,300 manufacturing jobs. The sites rely on electric arc furnace technology to produce high-specification alloy steels.


Critical Aerospace and Defence Applications

The company manufactures specialized steel components for highly sensitive applications. Key outputs include aircraft landing gear parts and helicopter rotors. The facilities also produce steel casings for rockets, projectiles, and artillery systems.

During the liquidation process, the government funded an independent liquidator. This funding maintained plant safety and ensured worker wages were paid. Ministers initially sought a private buyer for the assets. However, officials determined that private proposals failed to offer long-term stability or taxpayer value.


Integration with National Industrial Strategy

Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds stated that the intervention is necessary to prevent industry decline. The acquisition safeguards strategic capacity while buying time to develop a long-term development model.

The Department for Business will coordinate with local authorities to finalize the structure. Future commitments will be funded through existing departmental budgets. The financial cost of the transaction has not been disclosed.
