U.S. steel import applications recorded a notable upward shift in July, driven by sharp increases in inbound shipments from South Korea and Mexico. According to data from the United States Commerce Department Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis program summarized by the American Iron and Steel Institute, total import permit applications reached 2.29 million tons for the month. This figure represents a 10.1 percent increase from June and a 6 percent rise compared with the same period last year.


Import Surge Led by South Korea and Mexico

The expansion in U.S. steel imports was heavily concentrated among specific trade partners, offsetting sluggish performance from traditional suppliers like Brazil and Canada. Import permit applications for South Korean products surged to 514,000 tons, marking a 22 percent increase month-on-month and an impressive 79.7 percent jump year-on-year. Meanwhile, imports from Mexico reached 327,000 tons, representing a dramatic 71 percent leap compared to June volumes.

Conversely, imports from other major regions showed downward corrections. U.S. buyers filed permits for 180,000 tons of Brazilian steel, down 41.5 percent from a year prior. Canadian steel shipments also dipped slightly to 279,000 tons, reflecting a cautious adjustment by North American buyers managing local supply chains and regional pricing dynamics.


Product-Specific Growth and Mill Activity

Analysis of specific steel categories reveals substantial import growth in structural and industrial grades. Month-on-month data highlights large increases in oil country tubular goods, up 62 percent, wire rods up 58 percent, standard pipe up 51 percent, and hot-rolled bars up 43 percent. Year-to-date figures similarly point to elevated demand for heavy structural shapes and rebar.

Despite the influx of foreign material, domestic steel production remained relatively stable. U.S. raw steel production for the final week of July reached 1.87 million tons, up 0.6 percent from the previous week and 5.6 percent higher year-on-year. Domestic mills maintained a robust capacity utilization rate of 81 percent, indicating that steady domestic demand has temporarily absorbed both local output and rising import volumes.
