AddUp Becomes First OEM to Achieve ASTM Additive Manufacturing Safety Certification

ASTM Additive Manufacturing Safety Certification

Pioneering Safety in Additive Manufacturing

AddUp, a leading additive manufacturing company based in Cébazat, France, has announced its North American subsidiary in Cincinnati, Ohio, as the first OEM to receive the new ASTM Additive Manufacturing Safety (AMS) certification. This achievement marks a milestone in the AM industry. AddUp collaborated with ASTM International to develop safety guidelines ensuring safe operations in AM facilities.

Austin Kron, Director of Operations & Field Service at AddUp, shared, “When we started our own AM facility, no clear standards existed. We aimed to help create a roadmap, showing how to do it safely. We are proud to set the gold standard for AM safety.”

Comprehensive Safety Audit and Certification

The AMS certification process included a detailed audit of AddUp’s AM facility, focusing on safety measures like PPE, machine installation, powder handling, hazardous waste disposal, and facility cleanliness. The Safety Equipment Institute (SEI) conducted the first audit for this new safety standard. AddUp worked closely with SEI auditors to meet and understand the safety protocols.

AddUp’s Solution Center: A Model Facility

The AddUp Solution Center in Cincinnati, established in 2021, served as the model facility for the AMS audit. The center, equipped with Powder Bed Fusion (PBF) and Directed Energy Deposition (DED) machines, focuses on safety. It includes fire suppression systems, static control measures, dust cloud mitigation, air quality controls, and extensive employee training. It also provides AM services and consulting to customers while meeting ISO 9001, AS 9001, and ITAR/CMMC compliance.

Leadership in AM Safety and Consulting

AddUp offers consulting services through its LevelUp Service Solutions program, helping manufacturers set up their own safe AM facilities. This program ensures companies meet the highest standards of safety and efficiency in additive manufacturing. AddUp’s leadership in the industry continues to grow.

Paul Bates, Senior Lead of Training and Certification Programs at ASTM International AM CoE, praised AddUp, saying, “AddUp has set a new standard for AM safety, and we are grateful for their dedication to advancing the industry.”
